About the artist

Paul Madeline was a post-impressionist painter born in 1863 in Paris. He studied Fine Arts at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He founded " La Société Moderne" alongside the painters Lebasque, Raffaelli, Aman and Chabas. Madeline mostly painted French landscapes especially of the regions La Creuse and Brittany. His paintings show a remarkable light and sense of colour. In his later paintings he introduces figures in regional costumes, especially from Brittany. He died in Paris in 1920 and few years later, in 1926, The Salon des Indépendants devoted a retrospective to him. He was an annual exhibitor of the Salon des Artistes, the Salon d'Automne and the Salon de la Nationale des Beaux-Arts.
