Alfred Aaron was a painter and decorative artist. He was a Post Impressionist and a pioneer of the New Movement in Art. he was born into a Jewish family in Warsaw who were amongst many fleeing the Pogroms in Europe. The family moved to Devon when he was 6 before moving to Spitalfields, East London. He became a British citizen in 1894. He returned briefly to Poland in 1903 and started to paint works based on his Jewish identity and faith. His one-man exhibition was held at the Bruton Galleries in 1905. In July 1911, after an artistic epiphany he became influenced by modern French paintings and his style became Post Impressionist and he became one of Britains 'Fauves'. Wolmark's paintings, like those of Vincent Van Gogh are characterised by a bold application of paint and heavy impasto. He was a friend of the Sculptor Henri Gaudier-Brzeska who modelled a bronze of the young artist in 1913. He visited American in 1919 and his work was exhibited at the Kervorkian Gallery. There was a major retrospective exhibition of his work in 1975 at the Ferrens art gallery in Hull. His work is represented in many public and private collections including: The National Portrait Gallery, The Tate Gallery and the Ben Uri Gallery as well as many regional Galleries.
