Gussow was a German artist and university professor, who worked in Italy and Weimar. He taught at the Academy of Fine Arts, Karlsruhe from 1876-1881 and at the Prussian Academy of Arts in Berlin and, from 1883 in Munich. He was predominantly a realist painter, mainly specializing in figure subjects and portraiture but like many artists occasionally painted more domestic subjects including this German village in the snow.
