Henry Jules Geoffroy was born in Marennes (Charente-Maritime). He died in Paris in 1924. He specialized in genre scenes and portraits working in oil, watercolour and pastel. Geoffroy was a pupil of Leon Bonnat and also Adam Levasseur and first exhibited at the Paris salon in 1874. He became an associate member of the Society of French Artists where he received a third class medal in 1886 and, in 1900, a gold medal at the exposition Universelle. Geoffroy was also awarded the Legion of Honour. He is acknowledged as an outstanding painter of children and childhood.
