Richard Carniel was an Italian irredontist, born in Trieste. He was a patriot committed to recovering former Italian territory, and enlisted in the Italian Legion in 1914. However, he lived in Paris and exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Indépéndants, where a retrospective of his work was held in 1920: on show were landscape views of Paris, nudes, portraits and a self-portrait. He died, on the battlefield in 1915
