After an initial framing as a wood carver he began to study art under Hildebrand and later under Carolus Duran. In his paintings he became influenced bu Impressionism. He became friends with Pissarro, Seurat and Signac and joined the Neo-Impressionist Group. He was invited to exhibit in 1889 with the ‘Twenty’. He exhibited at the Salon des Indépéndants from 1887 and was elected president after Signac’s retirement in 1934
